A computer infected with a virus (or malware, norton spyware removal, etc) is something I see often and can cause major problems - everything from slowing your computer to a crawl to taking over your web browser or even your whole computer. A firewall is a piece of software or hardware that sits between your computer and the network and only allows certain types of data to cross. Some viruses are created to get your contacts from your email program and then have a party emailing themselves to all of your friends.
